The detection stage is the entry point of every digital investigation. It is where potential leads first appear - often in fast-moving, emotionally charged, and highly manipulated online environments. In conflict settings, content may circulate widely before it is verified, framed to provoke reaction, or designed to escalate tension.

This module develops disciplined detection practices grounded in real-world reporting conditions. It supports journalists and civil society actors in identifying credible investigative signals while avoiding the amplification of rumours, manipulated material, hate speech, or incitement.

Rather than prioritising speed, the focus is on judgment, restraint, and early risk awareness. Strong detection decisions reduce harm and strengthen the integrity of the investigation from the outset.
